TACK & DRESS RULES – DRESSAGE & RIDING TEST
TACK:
The following ARE permitted:
v
English type saddles
v
Side saddles, except for riding test
v
Preliminary, novice, rural riders and riding
tests – ordinary snaffle bridles only
v
Elementary and medium tests – ordinary
snaffle or double bridles
v
Nosebands are obligatory (drop, flash or
cavesson with a snaffle and a cavesson with a double bridle)
v Discreet padding of the bridle at the poll or noseband is permitted
v
Breastplates
v
Neckstraps in preliminary dressage or novice
riders test only
v
Anti fly impregnated browbands or fly repellent
discs
v
Numnahs and saddle cloths (logos must be
no more than 14cm x 14cm)
v
Stallions MUST wear a bridle tag
The following ARE NOT permitted:
v
Martingales
v
Bit guards, tongue guards and tongue straps
or tying down the horses tongue
v
Neckstraps (Novice tests and above and advanced
riding tests)
v
Grackles
v
Boots and bandages (substitutes for conventional
shoes are permitted)
v
Saddle covers
v
Seat savers, except an unobtrusive saddle
coloured gel pad seat saver, unless the rider has dispensation from BRC office
v
Market Harborough’s, side, draw, check
or running reins
v
Hackamores and other bitless bridles, blinkers
or hoods
v
Fine wire, twine or cord around the horses
mouth
v
Fly fringes, gauzes or ear covers only permitted
in warm-up unless written permission from BRC office
v
Full faced fly shields
v
Sheepskin cheekpieces
v
Side saddle in riding test only
DRESS:
v
Jewellery or any items worn in facial or
body piercings are NOT permitted
v
Long hair hanging below the shoulder when
standing MUST be in a hair net
v
Collar and tie or hunting stock are permitted
v
Black or brown polished gaiters with matching
boots are permitted
v
Gloves are compulsory for dressage and recommended
for riding tests
v
A hard hat with 3 point linkage harness
to the appropriate standard MUST be worn
v
Commanders for rural riders (Team of 6)
MUST be in correct riding dress
EQUIPMENT:
v
Whips must not exceed 110cm in length and
are only allowed at Area competitions or at Area and Championships if carried by side saddle riders
v
Spurs with necks set on the inside of the
heel, roughened or cutting edges serrated spurs with or without necks are NOT permitted
v
Spurs MUST be worn with the curve of the
neck directed downwards
v
Seniors may wear smooth rowels not exceeding
1cm in diameter
v
Spurs that have a smooth rotating rubber
or plastic ball on the shank are permitted
v
Spurs are compulsory for medium dressage
tests
v
Spurs are NOT permitted for riding tests
v
Cruppers and balancing straps are permitted
v
You may not warm up in equipment not permitted
in the actual test
COMMANDERS:
v
Dressage and riding tests at Area competitions may be commanded, but NOT at the Championships.
Rural riders (Team of 6) MUST be commanded at all times.

(but will incur a 5 point penalty)
